The World Cup Bid, Strictly and Sports Personality of the Year

“As we come to the end of an eventful year for sport I think it is only right that I talk about England’s World Cup bid. I think it was really disappointing for everyone involved that England missed out on staging the World Cup in 2018.

I really did think we had a great bid and that due to the love of football here, England would be truly devoted to holding a brilliant World Cup. What was also disappointing was that we had received so much optimistic feedback with regards to the presentation and we only received two votes- I do believe that there were false promises made and that there needs to be a greater transparency in the bidding process.

I think that talk of the World Cup taking place in the winter is ridiculous it just goes to show there should have been more forethought in picking the country set to host the world’s greatest tournament.

As for ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ I think the best lady won- Kara Tointon was a worthy winner and I am extremely happy for her as she is a lovely girl. Matt Baker was extremely accomplished but I felt Kara just had that edge over Matt, Pamela was great all competition and she can look back at what she has done with great pride.

It was one of the best experiences of my life and it helped me get fit, learn to dance and make some great friends. I will miss those spray tans and make up sessions though! (joking!)

The BBC Sports Personality of the Year was a brilliant event and I was fortunate to have attended and I sat next to Sven Goran Eriksson. Sven remembered my time as a youngster and as a professional with Leicester City and invited me to come and sit in on a training session which was very nice of him, he is a true gentleman. As I had walked into the arena Andrew Castle announced me arriving and I was treated to 12,000 people giving me a round of applause taking me back to my football days!

AP McCoy was the right choice for the Sports Personality Crown, he has won time and time again on the racecourse and winning the Grand National this year meant that he has won everything possible and his dedication is an example to many that if they want to take sport seriously that is how they should do it- 100% commitment. I was also very happy for Phil Taylor, he deserves to be recognised for his incredible achievements in darts and I am sure he will probably go on to win a 16th title next year!”
